BEGC-110

BRITISH LITERATURE: 19th CENTURY

Assignment for July 2023 and January 2024 Sessions

Section A

Q.I Explain with reference to context the following lines: 4 x 5 = 20 .

(i) There she weaves by night and day A magic web with colours gay. She has heard a whisper say, A curse is on her if she stay To look down to Camelot

These lines are from the famous poem “The Lady of Shalott” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The poem tells the story of a young woman who is isolated in a tower on the island of Shalott. She spends her days weaving a tapestry, seeing the outside world only through a mirror.

The lady is under a curse that prevents her from directly looking out at the real world, particularly toward the nearby city of Camelot. Instead, she sees the world reflected in the mirror. If she were to break the curse and look directly at Camelot, the curse would befall her.

The lines you mentioned describe how she weaves her tapestry both day and night, creating a magical web filled with vibrant colors. She has overheard a whisper warning her that a curse will befall her if she dares to look down to Camelot. The poem follows her story as she eventually succumbs to temptation and looks directly at Camelot, leading to tragic consequences.

(ii) She had a heart—how shall I say?—too soon made glad, Too easily impressed; she liked whate’er She looked on, and her looks went everywhere.

(iii) The sea is calm tonight. The tide is full, the moon lies fair Upon the straits; on the French coast the light Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand, Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.

(iv) Backwards up the mossy glen Turn’d and troop’d the goblin men, With their shrill repeated cry, “Come buy, come buy.”
